white mealy type insects on houseplants
My sister lives at the beach. She has beautiful houseplants for a while, then they start getting these white fuzzy looking insects on her plants. Sometimes outside also. What causes this and how do you get rid of them? Thank you, Adrienne

These insects are called mealybugs. There are many species of mealybugs, so it may well be different ones attacking the indoor plants than the outdoor ones. They can be difficult to control because they have a waxy coating that tends to repel insecticides. Insecticidal soap helps break through the wax and can kill them. Rubbing alcohol swabbed directly on them also works.
