White specks on underside of tri-color beech tree leaves
Tree's on north side of house. Leaves are inside purple with pink edges. I've noticed white specks on underside of leaves. Are these some kind of bug? It seems to be spreading. We've been getting a lot of rain lately. Tree gets light, but no hot direct sun. I don't want to lose it. Help!

Thanks for writing. Without being able to see your tree in person, I can't say for sure what's going on. The white specks could possibly be an insect infestation (such as mealybugs, whiteflies, or scale insects), they could be the sign of a disease (such as powdery mildew), or they could be harmless.

Because someone would really need to see the specks in person to make a diagnosis, I'd bring a couple of the affected leaves to the folks at your Summity County cooperative extension office. Contact them at http://summit.osu.edu/
