maple tree with raised roots
large maple beautiful tree on my front lawn worse than no grass is the raised donut of soil around the trunk all the ground around the tree has been raised over the years by the roots Can I level it off somehow without killing the tree? can't build a wall around it because the wall won't sit well on all those roots. I don't want a bench around it. ????

"Hi
Sadly, there's not much you can do. Maple trees are notoriously shallow rooted and compete heavily with anything planted near them. You also can't put soil on the exposed roots without possibly damaging the tree. I would recommend you use a loose mulch such as shredded bark which won't suffocate the roots and then set pots of colorful shade-loving annuals underneath."
