pruning clematis
I have an overgrown sweet autumn clematis that has taken over the deck. Can I safely prune the plant back?

You sure can! Sweet Autumn Clematis blooms on "new wood"--the current season's growth. That means you prune it in early spring. During the season it'll grow back up over your trellis or deck and bloom in the fall without skipping a beat. You can cut it back as drastically as you wish; as far back as six to twelve inches above the ground is fine.
