"Splitting of the leaves sounds more like physical damage than any disease or insect pest. Have the leaves been exposed to wind, either from storms or when it was moved to the planting site?
Laciness of the leaves sounds like feeding injury from insects or possibly snails. Check the tree closely for the presence of either. Snails usually leave slime trails. Insects may be more difficult to pinpoint since they may fly in, feed, and fly away. Is the problem getting worse? You may not need to treat for any insects if they have already completed their feeding and moved on. If you do see insects that are feeding, a low-toxicity product such as spinosad (Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew). would be a good choice to use as a control."
