leaf growth on hydrangea
I planted a hydrangea last year. It grew nicely. This growth this spring is strange. Some of the leaves are fine, but other leaves are dwarfed and curling inwards on their stems. There appears to be no flower buds. I live near NYC. What can I do to save this plant?

The dwarfing an curling of leaves may be from a couple of things. The buds may have been injured over winter, resulting in malformed leaves and shoots now. The other possibility is herbicide injury. Has a broadleaf weedkiller been applied nearby? 2,4-D can move through the air, and will cause leaf distortion on certain plants. Dicamba, can move through the soil  with similar results. If it is herbicide injury, there's a good chance that the plant will grow out of it.
