shrubs to screen for noisy highway
I live on Long Island in NY next to a busy parkway which is very noisy. I would like to plant some shrubs or trees across the back and side of my property to try to block out some of the noise. My back yard has a fifty foot stretch of six foot wood fence on one side that gets a fair amount of sun during the day and about one hundred feet of chain link fence on the other side of the yard which is shaded by mature white oaks. Do you have any suggestions?

Well it's going to depend on how dense the shade is under those oaks. If the shade is very dense, you'll have a difficult time growing anything large enough to provide privacy under them. You''ll need to have at least 6 to 8 hours of sun to grow most screening or hedge plants. You can go to our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and do an ADVANCED search which allows you to plug in a host of different planting criteria. It will then give you a list of plants that might work.
