I have a saucer magnolia tree and this is the first year I've seen these huge red pods, very odd shape, that are now dropping from the tree. Is this normal? If so, can the seeds inside be planted?

It seems your magnolia is finally mature. These are the fruiting bodies of the tree which contain seed. However, most garden magnolias are grown from cuttings or hybrids and won't come true from seed. Plus, they are EXTREMELY hard to germinate, require a cold treatment, and slow to grow.
