All ornamental grasses have a tendency to die out in the center. At that point, it's a sign that the plant needs to be dug and divided. In the early spring (it's probably too late now) dig the clump and divide out the dead center and replant sections of the living portion of the grass. I do not recommend planting or covering the center with other plants because you'll have to dig into the root zone of the existing grass.
