Sloping Side Yard
The ground slopes down on the side of my house. This is an entrance for an elderly man that rents a room from me. Could large flat stones be chiseled into the slope to make a few steps? Would I need a hand rail? I want to make the entrance as safe as possible but I also want to keep my garden as natural as possible and don't have a lot of money to spend on this project.

A gently sloping ramp is generally the safest way to traverse a slope. A hand rail would add stability (and might be required by local building codes; check to make certain.) Large stones can be placed into a slope as steps, but usually this requires the assistance of a professional landscape contractor with special equipment to handle the large stones. A great deal depends on the steepness or grade of the slope. It may be money well spent to consult with a landscape contractor.
