New garden in Cold Lake, Alberta
I am moving into a new house in Cold Lake, Alberta (I believe Zone 1/2) and would like to know which plants (shrubs and perennials) will survive. At the present time there is only grass so I'll have to do some major landscaping. The house is split level with garage out front and a narrow walkway to steps leading to front door. Any ideas for landscaping the front would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's impossible for us to offer landscaping advice through this column without photos, etc. As for plant selection, you can go to our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and plug in your criteria and it should give you a list of plants that will work for you. In that region, however, your selection will be pretty limited.
