Laying stones and mulch around newly planted tree
I live on Wisconsin-Illinois border. So you know our winters. Anyway, we added on a room in backyard, now I planted a small ornamental tree, do I skim off small amount of grass & dirt around it, plant flowers and then lay mulch? (Landscape) Never have done it before.

You can either strip off the sod or kill it with a nonselective herbicide such as glyphosate, taking precautions to avoid getting any herbicide on the newly planted tree. After stripping or killing the sod, you can plant flowers, then apply mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.
