tomatoes and walnut trees
How far should they be apart?

The effect of walnuts on tomatoes shows up if their roots come into contact with one another. Roots of a mature walnut tree can spread up to 50 or 60 feet away from the trunk, so that's a generally safe distance. If you must plant them closer than that, you might try growing the tomatoes in container gardens so the roots don't go into the same soil where the walnut roots are growing.
