planting vegetable garden
I was wondering if digging about 6 feet deep placing plastic and then adding dirt back in will prevent unwanted insects and gophers from tunneling in and still allow vegetable to grow. Also, I have been reading about ants and it says they usually don't harm the plants, is that true for vegetables and is it different with red ants instead of black, we have several red ant hills in our back yard. what can we do?

Ants of any color generally do not bother vegetables. As far as digging down 6 feet, that seems very aggressive. You can probably do just as well by surrounding your vegetable garden with a chicken wire fence that's buried 2 to 3 feet deep around the perimeter.
