Gardening on a slope
Trying to cut down on lawn to manage as we age,I'd like to landscape a hilly section, that slopes down about 9 or 10 feet in the middle of our back yard. The yard is surrounded on 2 sides by tall pines and the road and house on the other 2 sides. It gets nice morning and early afternoon sun, shade the rest of the day. We border all the gardens in fieldstone or rock, which is plentiful. I just don"t know where to begin....Can you offer any suggestions?

You could create several levels of terracing for planting on the slope, using the fieldstone as the retaining walls, to tie the new beds in with your existing plantings. You might even create a small seating area/patio on one of the levels of the terrace to create a destination within the plantings.
