Plants Didn't Grow
Last fall, (early October) I planted ornamental cabbage. The plants lived, and look healthy, but didn't grow larger as I have seen others in the area triple their size. Also, had a similar problem with pansies in another bed nearby. The plants lived and bloomed during the winter but didn't increase in size. Can you suggest something I should have done? Thanks.

How's your soil? You can buy an inexpensive soil-test kit and find out whether your soil is lacking in needed nutrients. Another reason plants will live but not develop to their potential is root constriction. When planting, always make sure there is room for the roots to spread out. Impediments to watch out for: hardpacked soil, rocks, and roots of other plants.
