blue back in Blue Spruce
"Hi I have several pyramidal blue spruce about 15-20 feet high and approx 10 years old growing through out my yard They are beautiful and I have not had to prune them in years . My problem is with their colour as they get older they are loosing their lovely blue tinge. I know some people add certain minerals to the soil to increase the blue colour ahve you heard of this? We live in zone 5-6a southern ontario What do you suggest? thank you"

Well you can't add chemicals to the soil to change a spruce's color. You can only do that with hydrangeas. Color in spruces tends to fade as the plants mature, although the amount of color the tree loses depends entirely on what variety of blue spruce you have. Some of the newer hybrids remain quite blue through their lifetimes, but most of the older ones retain a light blue cast, but are never are as blue as they were when they were younger."
