Planning a garden
"I just brought a house with a medium front yard. I have a tree sitting in the middle of the yard. I would like to have a nice garden in the front but I am inexperience when it comes to that. I have seen several cottage gardens you have on your site. But I also love roses. I would love to get some idea on how I can plant a garden around the tree. DO I plant a cottage garden or Do I use roses. Also, I need something that is not highly maintained. I live in upstate NY. Thank you, Farrah"

"Roses, even the new shrub roses, take some work. Hybrid tea roses take spraying and fertilizing and, depending on the variety, may not grow in your upstate NY garden.

Roses also do poorly in the shade, so if you're thinking about planting under a tree, roses would not be a good choice.

Check for plans for shade gardens if you want something that will grow well around a tree.
