There are several indicators of ripeness on watermelons. The ground spot (where the melon rests on the ground) usually turns creamy yellow when ripe. Also, the tendrils where the melon attaches to the vine turn brown and dry up. If all else fails, you can cut a small plug into the rind of the melon to see if the flesh has fully colored.
