rats eating tomato
I have a small garden and do have chicken wire all around and every night their seems to be a rat getting in their and eating my ripe tomatoes what can i do? I worked hard on this garden and the pest gets the tomato just as it ripes not the ones that are still green.thanks for your time any ideas would be helpful.
Various rodents could be getting to your ripening tomatoes. Squirrels, chipmunks, rats, voles, or mice could be causing this type of damage. Depending on the scale of your planting, you have several options. You could encircle the plants with hardware cloth (1/4 inch mesh) and place a lid of hardware cloth over the cylinder to completely exclude the pests from getting at to the plant. Or you could try to bag individual fruits as they are close to ripening.

Innocent squirrels??? There's no such thing. They gobble up my ripe tomatoes! And last winter I trapped 12 of them in my attic.

Use a live trap first, to determine what the critter is.If you have one rat,there are more. Nothing except poison dropped into their burrows on a daily basis with eradicate them. Check to see if the bait has been taken. As for rat traps, it may take a few days to work. Wrap a twist-tie or fine wire around the bait (salami,other meats)- no peanut butter as you may kill an innocent chipmunk or squirrel. I love animals but had to declare war on these rats. Animal control may rent you a live trap.
