Need plants to discourage dogs from pooping in my yard
We are having a problem with neighbor dogs using our yard for their toilet. Talking to the neighbors hasn't helped-they don't even clean up poop in their own yard. Chain link fence not an option(too expensive). Other than prickly bushes which aren't really practical due to layout of lots in our neighborhood(parking alley at the back of the lot), are there any plants that dogs don't like the smell of that wouldn't be totally offensive to humans as well? Other ideas?

Sorry, there are no plants that will keep dogs away from your garden. The only surefire method is a fence. To protect sections of your yard, however, you could try a dog/cat repellent sold by Liquid Fence. I've been told it's pretty reliable, but since dogs are very individual in their likes and dislikes, it's not 100% effective. You can buy it at most garden centers or home stores. Again, it does not work if you spray your garden's boundaries. It's designed to protect certain plants or beds. Also, your neighbors refuse to take responsibility for their dogs, I would also consider calling animal control. Being allowed to run loose is a safety issue for these animals because they could easily get hurt by cars or accidently hurt a human being or other animal. No one should allow their dogs to run loose unless they are on a farm or ranch. You might actually be doing the dogs a favor by calling animal control.
