Feeding birds & squirrels but discouraging digging
I like to feed the birds and the squirrels just come naturally no matter what I try to do. It doesn't bother me too much as it gives my dog a hobby (chasing). BUT, they are constantly digging in my gardening, ruining everything. I'm afraid your answer will be to stop feeding them but I like feeding the birds. I would love some advice that works all the way around. Thank you.

Many people give the squirrels something to eat of their own, like a corn cob on a stake, to keep them out of the bird feeders. However, unless you can persuade your neighbors to give them a place to dig, you can't keep squirrels out of your yard whether you feed them or not. How bad is the digging? The squirrels in my neighborhood hide their nuts for winter in my yard and others, but that isn't very disruptive of the flowerbeds. You can keep them from gnawing on individual plants by using a pepper spray that tastes terrible, available at garden centers. Having a dog definitely helps.
