It's fairly common to see a crusty whitish layer on the soil surface of houseplants. That's a buildup of excess salts and minerals from the water. The salt and mineral deposits can stress plants, so it's best to remove it. You can scrape it off and then flush the pot with water to help dissolve and flush the rest down through the soil profile.
