Preparing a Las Vegas yard and garden
We bought a home in Las Vegas. Both front and back yards are covered in ugly gray rocks, to be removed (since bugs hide under the torn plastic base). We must prepare the soil from scratch for all new plants. It has a high clay content (caliche). All new soil can be introduced into the planters. We will install artificial turf, construct low planters for roses sweeping the wide corner as a perimeter border. What is the best soil mixture from scratch? When to start planting?

Try a loamy topsoil and mix organic matter (compost) into it. Plant in fall, so that plants have the winter during which to establish roots.
