Hard Soil
I have a small flower garden in Alabama, I have noticed that the soil is hardened and my plants are suffering. I guess I worked the soil too early or when it wasn't all the way dry. Is there a way to fix this in a garden spot that has already established annuals, perennials and bulbs in it? Can I just add compost to the top of the ground without actually working it into the ground?

Adding a several inch layer of compost and/or other type of mulch will help a lot. If you can use a garden rake or hoe to try to mix it into the soil, but if you can't, the mulch will help your situation a lot. I can't say this will fix the problem, but it should be an improvement over time."
