Composting ground up stump material
We have just recently had some white pine stumps and roots ground up. The woody part is ground pretty small and has lots of soil mixed with it. What is the best and quickest way to compost this material? I have heard layering it with lime will help break it down quicker. Is this true or is there a better way? I am planning to make a shrub border in this area and was thinking of stockpiling this material for later use. Thanks for your help.
I wouldn't bother with adding lime, as it doesn't seem to speed up the composting process. I would advise making large piles with thin layers of pine stumps plus soil, with grass clipping layers in between. This should break down fairly quickly and then can be used as a mulch for your new borders. The break-down will continue of course, and the product will gradually be taken into the new bed.
