Turf-type tall fescue is a good choice for clay. This tough grass tolerates slightly wet conditions and will form a dense stand of turf. Thoroughly till the soil before seeding. While you are at it, work in compost, well-decomposed organic matter, or peat moss to improve the soil structure and promote drainage. Any amendments you can add now will help the grass thrive down the road.
