Hi
Most pumpkins won't do very well in containers. If your children planted mini pumpkins there would be a chance they'd survive if you planted them in a very large container, but most large pumpkins don't do all that well in container culture. However, if you have no other option, then you could experiment with them and plant them in a large tub or halved whiskey barrel filled with rich potting soil. Pumpkins are heavy feeders and require a lot of nutrient-rich soil and plenty of water. Larger varieties also spread with vines stretching up to 20 feet long so be sure to place them where you have room for them to roam. They also need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight a day.
