Fast growing replacement shrubs?
I need to replace the shrubs in front of my house that were damaged by the 3 feet of snow we received in DC (Zone 7). What would be great evergreen replacements that we can plant now and will grow well over the summer? Flowering or non? Also, our front/side yard is mostly shady.

Thanks for writing. One note about fast-growing plants --- the quicker a plant grows, the more susceptible it is to attack from pests and diseases, as well as being damaged by weather. Also: In the world of shrubs, evergreen varieties are typically slower growing than deciduous varieties.

That said, you might consider rhododendrons, dwarf hemlocks, or boxwood for a mostly shaded area.
