pine needles
what can I grow in a northwest flower bed with lots of dropping pine needles. Everything seems to die here.

Sadly it's almost impossible to have a thriving garden under certain evergreen trees. If your trees are tall and the lowest branches are over your head you might have luck growing acid-loving plants such as azaleas underneath. However, if your evergreens are lower to the ground, the light competition along with the acid soil will make gardening underneath them difficult if not impossible. In those cases I suggest you leave the area mulched with needles and if you want to add color, place some shade-loving annual flowers in containers under the tree.
