Unfortunately, lilac (Syringa) won't thrive in your new yard because of the balmy climate. The plant needs cold winters to produce flowers each year. Take heart, though. Once you move, you'll no doubt discover equally wonderful flowering shrubs you can enjoy in Florida. Some favorite fragrant shrubs include natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa), crepe jasmine (Tabernaemontana divaricata), and Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac). You might also try crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), also called summer lilac.
