What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydroseeding a lawn instead of simply sowing the seed without mulch?

For very large areas where watering to keep the seedbed moist is difficult, hydroseeding is a great boon to getting a lawn started. The thin covering of mulch sprayed on with the seed holds in moisture and helps keep the delicate seedlings from drying out too much when they?re at the critical stages of germination and establishment. The primary disadvantages are that it is more expensive to hydroseed and that seeding a large area may require a professional with hydroseeding equipment. (Small patching jobs can be done without special equipment.)
