Can I keep my yard weed-free without a lot of chemicals?
Despite my instincts to tolerate a few weeds, I still feel the need (and pressure from my neighbors) to keep my front lawn weed-free. Can I battle the weeds in my lawn without a full-blown chemical assault?

Keep your lawn well fed and healthy. Vigorously growing turf presents few opportunities for weeds to get a start. You can remove perennial weeds by hand, but if you don?t get the whole plant (roots and all), you?ll find yourself bending and pulling it again and again. Large areas of weed-infested lawn may demand a more drastic solution, especially if you have a chronic problem. A preemergence control can wipe out crabgrass and other annual weeds by killing the young plants as they sprout. There are corn gluten-based preemer-gence products that are kinder to the environment. If you?re cautious about chemicals, consider soap herbicides; they are less toxic than others. Avoid broadly applying any herbicide in summer, when your lawn is most stressed by heat.
