Asters, goldenrod, and sedum are three of the surefire autumn anchor perennials. Grasses, anemone, Anise hyssop, sweet autumn clematis, and helenium are all great too.  Among annuals, pansies and violas can't be beat. And of course mums (try perennial mums instead of one-shot types)
