Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) has not only undergone a botanical name change (it used to be Coleus hybridus), but also has recently received a great deal of attention from plant breeders. Although coleus has long been noted for giving colorful splashes of reds, pinks, purples, whites, and greens to shady areas, recent introductions have incorporated sun tolerance. It’s a good bet that the coleus you pick up at the garden center these days will grow in full sun as well as in shade.
