Can you place a piece of chicken wire in the ground with your bulbs to keep animals from eating them? If so do you place the chicken wire under the bulb or on top of the bulb before covering it with dirt?
Thanks for writing. Laying chicken wire on top of the ground (covered in mulch) can be an effective way of stopping squirrels from digging up your tulips. I wouldn't cover the chicken wire with soil --- that will make it too hard to remove in the future. But pinning in down on the ground over the area where your bulbs are should be good protection. Otherwise, there are cages available for sale you can plant bulbs in --- they're not as much as a hazard as chicken wire is in the ground.
