Perinal Garden Pests

what garden pest is chewing at my plant stems about three inches from the ground and then just leaving the plant not eaten but broken off from the stem? I live next to a wet land area in Medfield, Massachusetts

Hi, Well it's hard to answer your question because there are lots of potential pests that could be doing damage in this manner. Everything from cutworms to rabbits to chipmunks, to birds could be clipping off your plants. Can you give me more information to go on? However, since this is happening only to your perennials and not your veggies, I suspect you have chipmunks, rabbits, or even birds doing damage. i suggest covering your garden with grow netting (you can buy at garden centers) to see if that helps keeping them at bay.
