container flowers is it ok to use empty water bottles

In doing container flowers is it ok to use empty water bottles instead of stones. My hubby thinks that it will be easier to move them around, but I am afraid that the bottles will break down and kill the plants. I also want to do some tomatoes and peppers in containers. /Would they be safe to eat with the plastic water bottles as drainage?? Thanks for your help

Plastic is quite inert if it's not exposed to sunlight. Plastic water bottles will last for thousands of years in landfills without breaking down. It's quite unlikely that you'll see any noticeable breakdown if you use them buried under soil in your container gardens.
