help in identifying plants by leaves rather than flowers

We bought a house last year and the neighbors tell us that years ago it was a garden showplace, but with the last couple of homeowners the gardens are in need of huge amounts of TLC. I love to garden but but cannot tell by the leaves what some of the plants are. Where can I find a guide that identifies plants by the leaves and not just the flowers. Thank You for your help.

Michael Dirr's book, Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, has line drawings of leaf shapes and buds for most trees and shrubs that you might have. Perennials flowers are bit more difficult, because they're really more about the flowers. I'm not aware of a good book that identifies perennial flowers by their foliage.
