The best fertilizer to use depends on the analysis of your soil. If you haven't had a soil test done, and want to just guess at what your plants need, a complete fertilizer such as 10-10-10 is a good safe guess because it supplies a bit of all the major nutrients needed by plants.

In my garden, I use synthetic, chemical fertilizers on annuals only. For perennials and shrubs, I spread chicken manure throughout my beds every fall. My garden loves me. For heavy feeders, like clematis, hydrangea and roses, I use Rose Tone (from Espoma) which is organic. I try to avoid chemicals when possible.
