How to landscape windy areas?

We live in Nebraska on a hill where it is windy. I have evergreens planted on lot line, but want to enjoy our 16 X 20 deck. I do not know how or what to to enjoy our back yard on the deck when it is so windy. PLEASE HELP!!! Thank you Jennifer

If you have a normal residential size lot, it may be difficult to provide an effective windbreak. A row of evergreens will help, but a full windbreak usually involves planting 2 rows of evergreens, 2 rows of deciduous trees, and 4 rows of shrubs (2 rows on both outer edges). That said, any quick growing plantings will help slow the wind. A privacy fence next to the deck can also help cut the effects of the wind.
