How do I calculate square footage?

What is the most accurate way to calculate the square footage of my home, especially if I have a lot of odd-shaped spaces?

The easiest way is to measure the perimeter of the house outside at the foundation and make a line drawing that shows all the dimensions. Once you have it on paper you can break the areas into squares and rectangles and simply multiply the width x length for each area, then add up the areas for the total. has a handy square footage calculator you can use not only for squares and rectangles, but also triangles and circles.
