Killing a weeping willow tree and it's root system

If I cut down my weeping willow tree at near ground level, will the roots die or continue to grow and cause issues?

The roots cannot grow if the tree is cut down and dead. Although if the tree resprouts and grows, then the roots will eventually start to regrow as well. Just make sure the stump is dead, and the roots will die as well.
