How do I get rid of an invasive periwinkle vine?

A friend gave me a small piece of periwinkle vine and it has taken over the garden! How do I get rid of it? My husband mowed over it, but it is growing back.

Periwinkle, also called vinca (Vinca minor), is handy in some landscapes, but as you found out it can be a bear to get rid of. It's a good replacement for grass in dense shade. It also does a great job of creeping along a slope and holding soil in place. The most effective method to rid your yard of vinca is to spray emerging sprigs with glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide, available at garden centers. Be sure to follow label directions. Also keep in mind that glyphosate will kill other plants it comes into contact with.
