wisteria maddness

I have wisteria that was planted long ago before I owned the house. It is simply out of control. Any insecticide on it only encourages it to grow. I have decided to try and put a positive use on it and build an arbor. How do I harness the rest of it and keep it at bay? I live in GA

Wisteria can be a rampant grower. The best way to keep it in bounds, is simply to prune it severely. You may need to prune several times during the growing season. It could also help to do some root pruning, cutting into the soil around the base of the plant to somewhat stunt its growth.
