When should I prune a sweet autumn clematis in Zone 5?

I live in Zone 5. Should I prune sweet autumn clematis? Is spring the time to do it?

The best time to prune your sweet autumn clematis (Clematis terniflora) is in early spring, long before it blooms. It doesn't require pruning-it's only something to do if you want to control the plant's size. To prune, cut back the stems to the lowest pair of buds or to the height where you'd like growth to start during the current season.
