A number of things can cause yellowing. First, be sure there are no pest problems. Inspect the plant closely for little critters like mites or aphids. If nothing, then it's probably a soil or nutritional problem. Clematis enthusiasts generally feel that a healthy compost mulch around the base of the plant can fix just about any nutritional problem, and they're probably right 99% of the time. Before getting soil tests done or buying fertilizer supplements, get some good quality compost/composted manure and spread a 2-3 inch layer around the plant. The problem should clear up soon, by next year if not sooner.
