How can I make a retaining wall look less severe?

We have a slope in the front yard that we leveled out by putting in a rock retaining wall. I like having some level space in the yard, but I don?t like the stark look of the retaining wall. What could we plant on the rock wall to make it less severe?

You have a couple of options for softening the effect of a rock wall. You could plant trailing vines or ground covers at the top of the wall, and allow them to drape down over the wall. English ivy (Hedera helix), Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata), and juniper (Juniperus) are woody creepers that will trail down over a wall. Ground-cover plants that could be tucked into small planting pockets in the wall include sedum (Sedum), thyme (Thymus), and sandwort (Arenaria).
