Brown Thumb needs advice...
Thanks for writing. I'd try dwarf willows, such as dwarf arctic willow (Salix purpurea 'Nana') around your house --- they're good for wet ground, but also hold up pretty well when it's dry. And smaller species shouldn't have issues with their roots and your foundation.
The best groundcover really depends on your site...the amount of moisture, sun, etc. I'd suggest starting with our groundcovers slideshow on the site and see if any of these appeal to you.
If you have moist soil and partial shade, I'd consider sweet pea, scarlet runner bean, or Boston ivy. If the soil is evenly moist but well-drained, you can consider many types of clematis, as well.
