Sweet corn needs warm temperatures for best growth. It needs full sun and prefers a soil pH between 5.8 and 6.5. Early plantings of standard sweet corn can be made around the frost-free date when soil temperatures have warmed to 55 F. Wait until the soil warms to at least 60 F to plant super sweet types. Plant the seed just 1/2 inch deep in cool soil and 1-1 1/2 inches deep in warm soil. Plant two or more rows of the same variety side by side to ensure good pollination. Because corn is wind-pollinated, pollen from one row must fall or blow onto the silks of an adjoining row to pollinate the kernels. Plant corn in a block of shorter rows to ensure better pollination. Space rows 30-36 inches apart.
